Robert M. Negendank

Robert M. Negendank, longtime Los Gatos High School teacher and resident of the town for 60 years, died on July14. He was 88.
He was born on Nov. 7, 1919 in Oshkosh, Wis., and raised there. He was a state tennis champion in high school and went on to play tennis and major in economics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. After his college graduation, he joined the Naval Air Corps in 1941 and spent the war years in Corpus Christi, Texas, as a flight instructor for South American cadets.

Mr. Negendank married his high school sweetheart, Esther, in 1943 in Corpus Christi. After the war he attended both the schools of law and education at Stanford University.
The Negendanks settled in Los Gatos where he would join the faculty at Los Gatos High School, teaching three generations of the town's youth during his 38-year career. Along with teaching social studies during the day, he taught a class in citizenship at night, developing many lasting friendships with his students.
Mr. Negendank had a love of sports. He coached both tennis and golf at Los Gatos High, taking many teams and individuals to both regional and state championships. He also enjoyed playing tennis and golf with friends and played an active role in the raising of his children as a baseball and tennis coach, fishing instructor, master camper and story teller.
After retirement, he became an active member of the SIRS of Los Gatos.
He was a founding member at Faith Lutheran Church in Los Gatos, and held several leadership positions. He served as the congregation's president, director of Sunday school programs and held various positions on the church council.
Mr. Negendank is survived by his daughter Mimi; his son Bob and his wife Ann; his son Terry and his wife Paula; and grandchildren Lee, Eric, Julia and Heidi. His first wife, Esther, died previously.
A memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 16548 Ferris Ave. in Los Gatos, on July 30, 11:00 a.m. Donations to Faith Lutheran Church are preferred in lieu of flowers.

R. Warner says...
Posted Wednesday, August 06, 2008
I remember the teaching of Robert Negendank with affection and gratitude. He loved to recall his delight at being serenaded the first time he went to an LGHS football game and heard the band play “On Los Gatos.” (That fight song is a knockoff of “On Wisconsin,” which he’d sung in college.) In 1958-59, when he was a great deal younger than I am now, he chose a group of seniors he thought would be insufficiently challenged by the standard “senior problems” course of the day (which preached about the dangers of drinking, smoking and sex), and he taught us economics and sociology. We read David Riesman’s The Lonely Crowd, and that put me on the first steps of what has been for me a rewarding career. I regret that he will not be around for the 50th reunion of our class. Steve Warner, class of ‘59
